"McLean emphasized how an improvisation is a dialogue not only with the material upon which the soloist commentates or with the musicians with which one is playing or with the listener but also, crucially, with himself or herself."
This is an incredible idea. I've never thought about it this way - and it's very similar to how Harold Bloom described a soliloquy in Shakespeare - not a dialogue with the audience, but a dialogue with oneself, and changing as a result of it.
Thanks so much - the kind words are always appreciated.
Interesting reissue - doesn't look sanctioned but I do wonder what role AI may play in cleaning up jazz recordings (similar to how it's used for the Beatles' catalogue) - overall, I'm pretty ambivalent about this but do think at least it's putting AI to better use than "making" so-called "new music."
Ezz-thetic pays royalties & they are made from the master tapes
Yes, it's an AI like in 'Let It Be'
There's one on the 1947 Monk Blue Note sides, in chronological order. This is a good place to start. Listen & see what you think-to me they sound like they were recorded last week.
Thanks for reminding me of this genius.
You're welcome - I've enjoyed revisiting some of his very best records.
Right up my alley. Minor Apprehension opened so many doors for me 🥁 I still love it and return to it whenever I need some inspiration. Hey thanks.
You're welcome! Thanks for the comment.
Cued all 3 on Apple Music. What a treat!
Enjoy!!!!!

Thanks - very kind of you to say. The thought is a riff off of something I heard bassist Christian McBride say about jazz and improvisation.
Awesome analysis & writing, Robert
Jackie's album titles alone were wonderful!
btw, this ezz-thetics remaster is incredible: https://www.jazzmessengers.com/en/99351/jackie-mclean/let-freedom-ring-to-destinationout-revisited
They use an AI for noise reduction Sounds like it was recorded last week

Oh OK - I automatically see the Euro dollar sign and think the worst.
A very well-written and insightful piece, as always.
Thank you, Andrew!
You inspired me to order the Association's greatest hits with your last piece. My LP just arrived in the mail.
Thank you for letting me know. Enjoy the listening!
