Thanks for this, Robert - I wasn't aware of this album but I'm enjoying it now! I hope you eventually come round to Led Zeppelin, and I think you'd be the ideal writer to take a look at one of their albums, if you ever feel the inclination.
In the past few months, I've picked up a few of Led Zeppelin's albums and have enjoyed them, especially the debut record. I think I will write about them early in the New Year, maybe a piece about changing one's mind about a group and how that can happen.
I love The Chambers Brothers and own both a stereo and mono copy of this album. Both are superb; the mono loses the phasing and panning from speaker to speaker, but it sounds very full, rich, and dynamic. Their version of "People Get Ready" is my absolute favorite. I am also glad you mentioned Betty as the writer of 'Uptown.' She is finally getting her dues and credit, but for so many years she was totally ignored.
But as much as I love this album, my favorite of theirs has grown to be 'New Generation.' From its beautiful Mati Klarwein cover to the heavy funk and soul within. The extended guitar grooves on the title track may not be as wild and psychedelic as 'Time,' but it totally jams! And the utterly breathtaking and deeply emotional "When the Evening Comes" is so haunting that it never fails to bring tears to my eyes.
Their double LP, 'Love, Peace, and Happiness' is also solid but nowhere near as consistent as 'The Time Has Come' and 'New Generation' are.
I'll definitely pick up a copy of 'New Generation' the next time I come across it.
'Love, Peace and Happiness' is good, especially illustrating the range of what the Chambers Brothers could do, from the expansive title track to an acapella 'Undecided.'
Their second album on Columbia, 'A New Dawn - A New Day' is good too, if a little calculated in trying to replicate the power of 'The Time Has Come.'
Like you, Robert, I had heard nothing like "Time Has Come Today'. I don't remember when I first heard it but I do remember listing to the vinyl on a Radio Shack sound system at our apartment while in college. I had just returned from a summer study course at Stanford University in July 1967.
It still astounds listening to it today.
Especially when you listen to it as part of the full album - it just accentuates how mind-blowing it was and still is.

Radio: one bright spot which is NOT a college station is kkup.com.
No ads, and the programming is all over the map.
Nice to know there is still good radio out there.

That must have been something to hear it in 1967.
The music then was the glue that joined the movements together.
I believe that, for sure.
Such an important song, during a very important time in history.
As I delve more into 60s psychedelic rock, I am learning there are quite the variety of approaches.
Bubble gum pop psychedelic that was popular in England, Acid psychedelic rock, fuzzed out psychedelic rock, etc.
It's been such a fun rabbit hole to explore for sure.
There's a lot of great music to discover - both the well-known stuff and the fast less-known of which there is a whole lot.
It's great to listen to, not so great for my wallet if I see, Arzachel or those lesser known bands at the record store.
Nice - thanks for sharing that memory. Appreciate it!
