Great read! Gibson's legacy as an afterthought is really unfortunate, considering the influence he's had on so many.

Newbury was a new one for me, and man, was that tough to listen to! Not because it's bad-it's not- but because it's so sad. I think you nailed when describing his work as "existential desolation, painting portraits of the gulf between partners which will never be bridged and moments that are best left alone."

For me, my thoughts on Gibson are likely skewed by the fact that my dad is a huge fan so Don Gibson's music has been part of my life for ever since I can remember. Still, few were the triple threat that Gibson was: natural songwriter, great singer and great rhythm player on guitar.

Newbury is sometimes so sad and downcast, it can seem almost like parody but it never crosses into that territory.

Great Article Robert, always so surprised of the lack of Inclusion regarding Don Gibson, I can understand Mickey to a certain extent due to most thinking of his songwriting prowess rather than his vocal. Enjoyed it.

Thank you for this great issue Robert 👏 I really love country music, but somehow I didn't knew any of the songs you've picked for today. It's a true pleasure for my ears
